Hiraeth is the daughter of Lucifer and Serena Sanderson. One of many, Hiraeth is the sister of Sabrina Spellman, Winifred, Mary, Sarah, and Salina Sanderson. Hiraeth, much like her sisters were wanted to be forever young; in her attempts at immortal life, Hiraeth became cursed with turning old. To remedy this, Hiraeth would feed off the life sources of men. Hiraeth fought tooth and nail to find a cure, something Winifred, Mary, and Sarah did not. They had enjoyed the killing of men, and in a power struggle with her sisters, Hiraeth killed the three.

Hiraeth and her sisters are direct descendants of the original Salem witches, earning them a powerful connection with their magic. Hiraeth being one of the strongest and eventually becoming the "Queen" of Salem, where her sister and their coven control the city. 

Sometime during her years of being in Salem, Hiraeth fell in love with Lucius Butcherson, an enemy of her family and a necromancer. Despite her many attempts to kill him, some still ongoing, the two's union brought forth powerful twins, Rhysand and Valauna. The twins constantly drained Hiraeth's life-force during her pregnancy, almost killing her.

After the birth of her twins, Hiraeth and Lucius had split, and Hiraeth found herself falling in love with a god of Fate. Kairos had been everything Hiraeth had needed, and more. Hiraeth and Kairos had formed a deal; in exchange for her companionship, Kairos would break the curse on Hiraeth, and so he did. Grateful for the ending of her curse, Hiraeth fell head over heels for the god, eventually marrying him. As a gift to her on their wedding, Kairos killed Hiraeth and brought her back to life, granting her godhood. Hiraeth had been reborn as a goddess, gaining dominion over magic and a small bit of fate, thanks to the sharing of Kairos's powers with her. 

However, all good things must come to an end. After the birth of her son, Magnus, Kairos and Hiraeth split up. The effects of her split with God left Hiraeth in tatters and she decided it was best to leave her son, Magnus, to grow up with his father, so he could learn the ways of Fate and his true heritage.

After these events, Hiraeth found herself stepping foot back into Salem. Her home had changed, and not for the better. The Butcherson's had taken over while she had been away, leaving Salem filled with necrosis and the undead. Hiraeth vowed to reunited with her sister, Salina, and bring Salem back to the glory it had been under her care.
